Mexico City Government Presents 2026 Budget Focused on Infrastructure and Welfare

Head of Government of Mexico City, Clara Brugada, presented the budget for the 2026 fiscal year on Thursday, promising it would be focused on priorities such as infrastructure, mobility, water, drainage, welfare, security, housing, and strengthening the boroughs. As part of the FIFA World Cup, authorities will invest 7.5 billion pesos in 'projects with permanent benefits for the capital's residents.' According to the Secretary of Administration and Finance, Juan Pablo de Botton, next year Mexico City will continue its policy of reducing real debt by 0.5%, which will allow it, he assured, to become the 'federative entity with the best credit rating in the country and the maximum local scale.' The budget aims to consolidate the 'republican austerity and budgetary transparency' promoted by the 4T at the federal level, 'without luxuries or privileges in the government,' while also promoting 'the generation of healthy finances that allow for fiscal autonomy and less debt.' It is also expected that Mexico City's income will increase by 24%, which will strengthen public finances. The Head of Government also detailed two special appendices to next year's budget. On one hand, public investment, which will increase by 55% to reach 58 billion pesos. On the other, funds for security, which will see a 7% increase. Sources from the Palace of Donceles anticipate that the budget could be approved around December 15. Meanwhile, figures from the MORENA parliamentary group in the local Congress have already begun working on its processing to achieve rapid approval in one of the sessions scheduled for mid-December. 'A responsible budget,' they stated.
